Not Convinced?
Check out the introduction from the book, which I’ve reprinted here:
This is one way to describe me: skinny, pale and bald. I have a scar on the bridge of my nose and as much as I would like to think that it came from a knife fight or a mountain lion attack, it actually came from a flying elbow during a game of beachball volleyball. I have more than a few moles on my head, a patch of white hair in my beard and a handful of acne scars on my face.
This is another way to describe me: I have a girlfriend who loves me. I am an entrepreneur making money while working for myself. I am location independent: I set my own hours and I can work from anywhere. I have a great network of friends extending across three continents. I am an avid guitarist, a travel writer and an occasional artist. Above all, I am happy and I genuinely look forward to each day when I wake up.
For many people, the first description does not seem compatible with the second one. After reading the first paragraph, you might have assumed that I am depressed or anti-social.
Understand that your hair is not you. It never was and it never will be an important part of your identity. Your hair is also irrelevant to your happiness. You might not believe that right now. I know that it is not an easy statement to realize. If it was, I wouldn’t be writing this book.
There are signals throughout our society that let us know going bald is not a good thing. In this book, I will show you how those signals are changing. More importantly, I will show you why those signals were worthless in the first place.
My mission is simple: to help you get over hair loss and build self-confidence.
To that end, I will share my story and the many strategies and lifestyle changes I have adopted to become a more confident and ultimately, more happy person.
Before we dive in, I want to make a few things clear. I am not a “guru.” I will never tell you that this will be easy or that when you finish this book the clouds will part and you will instantly have a new lease on life. I will not mislead you with magical silver bullet solutions. They simply don’t exist.
I also won’t give you any cheap coping mechanisms. For example, if you’re losing your hair and complaining about it, someone might tell you “it could be worse.” Sure. It’s true, you could be paralyzed from the neck down. At the end of the day, I think it’s important to keep perspective. At the same time, saying things could be worse is another way of acknowledging that things are by some measure bad.
I’m hear to tell you that things aren’t bad. It may take some time to convince you, but I have a lot of confidence in the pages that lie ahead. You will, of course, have to put some work in on your end. Many of the later chapters in this book are devoted to concrete steps you can take to get over hair loss and build confidence. You will find case studies and examples from my own life, and you will be armed with a set of strategies that you can start implementing immediately. I can’t take the steps for you, however. You have to do it yourself.
But before we even get to that point, I need to convince you that this idea that “baldness is bad” is a fiction. It may seem like I have my work cut out for me, but let’s see what you think 20 pages from now. With that in mind, let’s get this show on the road.
The Internet overflows with websites about hair transplants, Propecia and Rogaine. My mission is to let guys know that there is another way of dealing with hair loss. It doesn’t involve expensive surgery or using a special shampoo everyday. Join me and I’m confident you’ll see male pattern baldness in a whole new light.
